About

Steve Curl is a fine artist, cartoonist, and long time teacher at the Pacific Art League where he has an enthusiastic following of students, some for 20 years or more.

Steve’s fine art is mostly in the medium of watercolor and focuses on landscapes & seascapes that have inspired him from his local hikes & wilderness travels. His work can be seen online at www.stevecurl.com and at the www.PortolaArtGallery.com

Steve also teaches Watercolor Painting at least one week a year in Yosemite National Park via the Yosemite Conservancy at the Happy Isles Art & Nature Center. He loves getting people outside painting & seeing the park through an artist’s eyes.

In 2018, Steve was the Artist-in-Residence at Zion National Park for the month of February. He looks forward to applying for & accepting more residencies & teaching opportunities in the national parks throughout the USA and Canada.

Steve has been a cartoonist & caricaturist since grade school, light-heartedly lampooning friends, family members, politicians, & teachers. His classroom papers were routinely decorated with cartoons in the margins...and still are.  He has been published in numerous local magazines & newspapers including the Palo Alto Weekly, the Palo Alto Daily News, and the Daily Post. Steve was the Editorial Cartoonist for the Palo Alto Daily News for 17 years where he won many 1st Place awards for his cartoons from the Peninsula Press Club at their annual awards banquet & ceremony. Steve continues to draw caricatures for presentation pieces and “live” at parties, company picnics, & special occasions. He enjoys teaching Cartooning in PAL Summer Kids Camps and occasionally in workshops for adults. He finds cartooning to be a most delightful & pointed avenue to express humor. He hasn’t been run out of town yet…but it could happen.

Testimonials

Steve's laid back personality lended itself to better focus on his input and critiques. A very friendly way to get people to talk about their art.
