In loving memory
Stacy Connaway was an exceptional artist above all else. She devoted her days to painting--watercolor, oil, and acrylic. She was a meticulous needleworker and created needlework designs for many years. Not only did she love but also beautiful plants, flowers, and her German Shepherds, the last one named Saska.
Stacy’s on-going interest in PAL went far back. Her grandmother took art classes at the Pacific Art League. She could recall PAL’s history from memory. Her grandparents were partners in a big department store in San Francisco called the White House and she learned from them an appreciation of European china and a love of fine things. “The White House was known for its French atmosphere. In fact, the store bore more than just a passing resemblance to the great Parisian department stores.”-(Lost Dept Stores of SF). Her mother was a member of the Allied Arts Guild and Stacy often helped her volunteer in their gardens. She was especially proud of the roses.
Stacy had taken art classes at the Art Academy of San Francisco and she was an accomplished chef. She catered our First Fridays and other events for many years but was not above getting down to paint and clean the storeroom in the back or hang shows. She donated a hanging system to PAL which improved the shows for many years. She was a listener and not much of a talker, although she had opinions which she would share on rare occasions. However, she was never one to indulge herself and lived a simple life. She turned 70 on April 15 in this pandemic-restricted year. She would not have had a party but would have enjoyed a fine meal in the company of friends. Stacy was always there for her friends. Her sudden demise leaves a gap in the life of the Pacific Art League, her family, and many acquaintances in the art world.
“Stacy was one of the movers on the Save PAL committee in 2007 and 2008. Without her, we could not have succeeded in keeping the building from being sold.”
- Robin Scholl
Remembering Stacy
“Stacy was one of the movers on the Save PAL committee in 2007 and 2008. Without her, we could not have succeeded in keeping the building from being sold. She was such a strong contributor to that effort. She was on the PAL Board of Directors for a short while and later served on many committees. She was on the building committee and contributed many ideas to the remodel and seismic upgrade. ”
— Robin Scholl
“Stacy was a pillar at the Pacific art League. She liked to hide in the kitchen at special events and some of our most delectable, gourmet hors d'oeuvres came from her creations. She didn't like the limelight but would have won an Oscar every year for best-supporting actress.”
